Our Story

Phonetic Spit empowers young people to find, develop, and publicly present their voices. We use arts and education and employ elements of creative writing, literature, public speaking, performance, and spoken word to develop confidence, resilience, job readiness, and high functioning literacy in the lives of thousands of young people in Arizona each year.

We conduct our programing in schools, group homes, youth detentions, and within a variety of public settings where the vast majority of the youth we serve hail from underserved communities.

As you may know, funding for programs like ours is constantly under threat at a local, state, and federal level. This is why your support is crucial.

Studies show that young people who participate in the arts are far more likely to excel inside and outside of the classroom and that students qualified as low income who are highly engaged in the arts are twice as likely to graduate from school.

At Phonetic Spit we have a simple slogan, "Break it down on the page, break it down on the Mic. Break it down in real life." This is to say, if you can create something consequential, and meaningful, and then articulate that truth publicly and powerfully, you will be far more likely to find success in the board room, classroom, and at the job interview.

In 2021 our organization was comprised entirely of volunteer support and was struggling to keep the lights on. We launched our first ever online giving campaign, entitled, "More Love in 2021," a campaign that raised $41,000 and garnered a whopping 528 individual donations.

This was all the spark we needed!

Since 2021 we've developed an engaged board of directors, acquired donor relationship software, maintained a healthy financial committee that provides oversight and ensures our books are above board. We've obtained high performing volunteers and teaching artists, improved our abilities to apply for grants and increased our fundraising capabilities by over 50%. We've secured our first ever corporate and foundational support, hired staff, and most importantly increased the reach, depth, and overall quality of our programs.

In so doing, we are knocking at the door of true organizational transformation. Your support will help us complete the transition from a start up organization into an organization that is growing into functional maturity. We are on pace to serve as many as 7000 young people this year, however, this is a goal, among many, that cannot be achieved with out the support of our community. That means you.
