A young person's ability to understand and use language shapes how they understand themselves, build relationships, succeed in school, and participate in the world around them.

Phonetic Spit helps young people discover the power of their own voices through creative writing, public speaking, and authentic self-expression. Our professional teaching artists create brave, engaging learning spaces where young people strengthen literacy, build confidence, and develop the communication skills they need to thrive.

Our programs reach thousands of young people across Arizona, including young people experiencing foster care, homelessness, juvenile detention, and other significant life challenges.

Our Impact

Last year, Phonetic Spit:

• Partnered with 10 middle and high schools across the Phoenix Valley
• Reached 4,134 young people through 122 in-class workshops
• Served 613 system-involved youth in foster care, group homes, and juvenile detention facilities
• Hosted 8 public events celebrating youth artistry, voice, and leadership

Phonetic Spit is a Qualified Foster Care Charitable Organization (QFCO). Arizona taxpayers who make an eligible contribution may receive a dollar-for-dollar credit against their Arizona state income tax liability.

2026 maximum QFCO tax credit:

$632 — Single, head of household, or married filing separately
$1,262 — Married filing jointly

Your contribution supports creative literacy programming for young people across Arizona while potentially reducing your Arizona state income tax liability by the same amount.
